Sophie Onufer

Sophie Onufer 90 of N. Charleroi passed away on Saturday December 5, 2020 at her home. Born in Monessen on August 24, 1930, a daughter of John and Mary Cibera Gulya.

Sophie was retired from the former Corning Glass in Charleroi. She was Orthodox by faith. Sophie had a reputation for her excellent baking and well known for her halupki. Sophie was a fun loving person who enjoyed cooking, gardening and polkas, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.

Survivng are 4 daughters and sons-in-law; Sandra (John) Timko of Rostraver Twp., Gloria (Rick) Bizick of Canonsburg, Karen (Joe) Niro of Rostraver Twp., and Bonnie (Paul) Brand of Carroll Twp., 11 grandchildren; Sophia Brand, Amelia Brand, Joelle (Dale) Fisher, Jocelyn Niro (fiancé Chris Nelson), Jillian Niro (fiancé Brendan DelBianco) Richard Bizick, Brendan Bizick (fiancé Krystina Litton), Briana (Chris) Fontana, John A. (Jessica) Timko, Jordan (Becky) Timko, Jessalyn Timko (fiancé Luke Ecimovic), 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 sisters; Irene Hora of Rostraver and Wilma Koday of Donora and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by 4 brothers; Andrew Gulya, John (Jay) Gulya, George (Giggie) Gulya and Charles Gulya and 4 sisters; Mary (Marie) Harley, Ann Dimonde, Catherine Gulya (her twin sister who died at birth),  an infant sister Margaret Gulya and her former husband John Onufer Jr..

Visitation will be held on Wednesday December 9 from 2pm-6pm with Parastas at 4pm in Melenyzer Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc. 825 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi where funeral services will be held on Thursday December 10, 2020 at 10:00am with Rev. Gregory Peterson officiating. Interment will follow at Monongahela Cemetery. 

Memorials in Sophie’s name may be made to Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, 1000 Lookout Ave.,Charleroi, PA 15022.

Due to Covid-19 state mandate face masks are required with social distancing in the funeral home. Please be mindful to keep your visiting time limited.
