Mildred "Stoogie" Zabawsky

Mildred "Stoogie" Zabawsky, 88, formerly of Charleroi, went to be with her Savior on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. A daughter of the late Theodore and Antonnina Spiwak Stetz, she was born May 27, 1924, in Charleroi. Mrs. Zabawsky was a member of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church and was an associate at the former Living Word Book Store, both in Charleroi. Affectionately known as Aunt Stoogie by her nieces and nephews, she loved spending time with children and teaching them the Christian values that would help them throughout their lives. Mrs. Zabawsky is survived by a daughter, Madeline "Madge" Zabawsky and husband, Dr. John DuBose, of Houston, Texas; close friend and caregiver, Juanita Bickerton, of Monongahela; sisters, Marcie Povich, Julia Susko and Catherine Kask; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew "Zip" Zabawsky, on Oct. 11, 1994; brothers, John, Mike and Steve Stetz; sisters, Ann Dominick and Helen Gialames. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the MELENYZER-DUBARR FUNERAL HOMES and CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 825 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi, where a funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, with Father Gregory Peterson presiding. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it was Mrs. Zabawsky's wish that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude's Hospital for cancer research (Form can be obtained at http://www.stjude.com/donate).
