Edwin John Popelas

Edwin John Popelas, 90, of Roscoe, passed peacefully on June 12, 2019, surrounded by family.  He was born on June 10, 1929 in Stockdale to the late Andrew and Helen Ruzicka Popelas.

Edwin served in the United States army during the Korean War.  He retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp. Allenport after 45 years of employment.  He was a member of the Roscoe American Legion Post #801, Roscoe Slovak Club, Knights of Columbus Council #956 Charleroi, and Belle Vernon Moose Club.  He also served God as an Eucharistic Minister, volunteer, and an active member of his church community at the former St. Joseph Catholic Church Roscoe for many years and was an avid gardener.

Edwin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Alice Moluski Popelas, their children and spouses: Patricia Guerra, Edwin Jr. and Kathy Popelas, Carol and Vincent Babich, Ronald and Lori Popelas, Michael and Dawn Popelas, 13 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Joan Zoppetti, of Stockdale. He was preceded in death by his brothers George and Andrew Popelas and his son-in-law James Guerra.

Visitation will be held on Friday June 14, 2019 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm in the Melenyzer Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc. 1008 Furlong Ave., Roscoe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday June 15 at 10:00am at St. Sebastian Catholic Church Belle Vernon with Rev. Elmer Alforque officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery Carroll Twp.. Military rites will be accorded by the United States Army Honor Guard and the Roscoe American Legion Post #801.

Our prayers go out to the entire Popelas family. Iggy was such a great guy who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His presence with my dad when he was Ill is something I will always remember and be forever thankful for. God Bless.

We thank God for Pap! We remember him for his selfless love and the blessings he shared with us in many ways including his spicy delights, which added a special joy to us all! We join Gram, Pat, Jamie and Nana, Elijah, Anayah and all the family in celebrating him! We will miss him dearly, but we are encouraged that he goes to his eternal home with his Savior and Lord!
