Dr. John Howard Lucy
After an 11 year battle with Huntington's-Chorea, Dr. John Howard Lucy, 71, of Roscoe, formerly of Farmington, began eternal life on Monday, June 20, 2011, at the Donnell House Hospice Center in Washington, PA. Born on March 9, 1940 in Uniontown, he was the son of the late George Howard Lucy, who passed away on Feb. 22, 1983, and Adeline Sullivan Lucy, who passed away on July 17, 1993. He attended Uniontown Public Schools graduating with the Class of 1958. After high school, he then continued his education earning the following degrees; in 1961, Bachelor of Science - Industrial Arts Education from California State College; in 1964, Master of Arts Degree from West Virginia University; in 1971, Doctor of Philosophy from The Ohio State University. As an instructor, John taught Industrial Arts classes at Turkeyfoot Valley School District in Confluence from 1961 to 1969, at The Ohio State University from 1969 to 1972, and at California University of PA from 1972 to 2000 in the Department of Sciences and Technology from where he retired due to his illness. He had many professional memberships but was most honored as a Trustee of Psi Chapter - Epsilon Pi Tau. John was an active member of St. Joseph R.C. Church of Roscoe and a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Uniontown. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years and caregiver for 11 years, Dorothy Valla Lucy; a sister, Shelda Lucy Kozares; nieces Donna Matthews and husband, Dean, and family, Diane Tomi and husband Jeff, Lynn Valla Czarny, Susan Valla Pitts, and Anna Valla Venturini and their families; a sister-in-law, Catherine D. Valla; a brother-in-law, William E. Valla and family; also several aunts, uncles and cousins; especially Michael P. Lucy and a very special friend and his wife, George and Dolly Frangos. Friends will be received Thursday, June 23, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Melenyzer-DuBarr Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc., 1008 Furlong Avenue, Roscoe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church with Rev. George Moneck officiating. Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to The Lucy Scholarship, The Foundation for California University of Pa, California, PA 15419, or a charity of your choice.
Dorothy, our thoughts and prayers will be with you in the coming months. After such a struggle, it must be some comfort that John is at peace and no longer suffering.
